A chain of twenty volcanic islands strung out north-west of Viti Levu, grassy hills dropping to white beaches and villages you enter only after presenting kava to the chief. They were closed to land-based tourism until 1987, and it shows: no roads, no cars, arrival by catamaran from Denarau. At Sawa-i-Lau you swim inside limestone caves lit by a hole in the roof.
