The valley is a trough of glacier-polished granite, walled in by the sheer face of El Capitan and the sheared dome of Half Dome. In spring Yosemite Falls thunders with snowmelt loud enough to hear from miles off; by autumn the meadows empty out and the deer take over. Higher up, Mariposa Grove holds giant sequoias two thousand years old.
